After a series of financial troubles and ownership changes, the Akron branch emerged December 31, 1885, as the Cleveland, Akron & Columbus. Actual construction of the LMRR was begun by placing oak ties, six inches square by eight feet long, onto layers of clay. (In later construction they were laid on a bed of gravel or sand.) Fastened to these ties were white oak stringers twelve feet long, and spaced accordingly to create a gauge of 4 ft. 8 1/2 in.
